The team at Seahub – Yacht Maintenance Software are thrilled to announce the launch of a new technology aimed at effectively managing new build & commissioning worklists.

The new platform, Seahub Warranty, will provide an innovative approach to supporting collaboration between crew, owners, ship builders and contractors in managing worklists and warranty claims during the launch and handover of new build vessels.

For owners and crew alike, the process of receiving a new build vessel is a period of high excitement and anticipation.  Commissioning involves testing entire systems to ensure correct operation and sign off from ship builders, OEM manufacturers and the crew acting on behalf of the vessel owners. Commissioning also includes testing of all aspects of the vessel including fixtures, lighting, structural elements, exterior paint – everything from rudders to radars.

During the process of commissioning and hand over, due to the complexity of modern new build vessels, inevitably issues will arise whereby corrective actions are required.  Seahub Warranty is specifically designed to support the process of these issues being documented and reported to ship builder representatives or project managers. The system allows for issues to be reported, locations marked, pricing estimates included as well as additional details which aid the process of reviewing each issue.

Review and approvals can then be granted which then allows for quicker resolutions and tracible outcomes.  Each resolved claim is then electronically stored and available for future reference.

One of the challenges facing ship builders are the high costs associated with corrective warranty works. In an ideal world, for both the crew and ship builder, the yard period after a vessels first season or trip is as short as possible with as fewer tasks as possible. Longer yard periods often reflect larger worklists or larger scopes of works and higher costs.

Issues detected in these first trips can arise from defects with supplier equipment, design vulnerabilities, or user error.   Seahub Warranty allows ship builders to monitor trends in reported issues.  Understanding this data can support future design decisions and decisions relating to suppliers used.  Not to mention happier owners and crew.

The process of how a Warranty Claim is logged and resolved is shown below:

Warranty Claim Process

Seahub Warranty leverages off the existing framework Seahub PMS provides which means a claim can be linked to a component within an accounts equipment database. Once a user creates a claim, notifications can be setup so that users associated with the account are notified.  Seahub Warranty is highly adaptive meaning it can plug into any existing ship builders internal processes. Technical integration into 3rd party systems is also possible

“One of the strengths of Seahub Warranty is the transparency it provides ship builders in relation understanding what issues are coming up on the vessels they are constructing. Trends tell stories and can shape future design” says Technical Director, Matt Hyde.

Two-way, real time communication can occur within Seahub Warranty which allows for stakeholders to collaborate through a centralised channel. Important comments, images and remarks can be consolidated into a single platform and saved for future reference and troubleshooting.

“We have engaged many of the leading ship builders to understand what and ideal system looks and feels like from a yard side.  At the same time, we have worked with the crew of dozens of new builds to understand what systems they are being asked to use as part of communicating with their ship builder on issues they detect” says Hyde.   “The purpose of this new platform is to provide a universal system that can be plugged in by ship builder or crew wishing to use a more digitised and efficient way of management new build work lists” Hyde continued.
